If you’ve ever wanted your Tesla’s digital avatar to flaunt a personalized license plate—matching your real vanity plate, a favorite flag, or a quirky design—you’re in luck. Tesla expanded the custom license plate feature to all models with the 2025 Holiday Update, bringing the fun originally limited to Cybertruck to Model 3, Y, S, X, and Cybertruck alike. Previously, enthusiasts had to wait for a separate firmware rollout; now, the feature is baked into the standard software for vehicles with Intel Atom or AMD Ryzen processors.
The customization lives inside Tesla’s Paint Shop tool, accessible from the central touchscreen. While the Tesla mobile app currently only shows the result, you can’t configure the plate from your phone—yet. Here’s everything you need to know to design and upload your own custom license plate visualization.
The custom license plate feature replaces the standard virtual license plate on your Tesla’s 3D vehicle avatar. You’ll see it on the main driving visualization, in vehicle status menus, and inside the Tesla app. The feature debuted alongside custom digital wraps in the 2024 Holiday Update but was exclusive to Cybertruck. A year later, the 2025 Holiday Update rolled it out to the entire fleet, making it a permanent part of the Toybox > Paint Shop menu.
All Tesla models with Intel Atom or AMD Ryzen infotainment processors are supported. That includes Model 3 (2021+), Model Y (2021+), Model S (2021+), Model X (2021+), and Cybertruck. If your vehicle runs Tesla software version 2025.2 or later, you’ll find the Paint Shop tool under Toybox. Older models with Tegra processors do not have this feature.
You can’t configure the plate from the Tesla app yet—only from the car’s central display. Here’s the step-by-step process:
You can design your own background image using any basic image editor on your computer. Keep these specs in mind:
Currently, Tesla only supports USB transfer for custom plate backgrounds. The recently added ability to upload custom wraps wirelessly from the Tesla app (via the “Custom Wraps” feature) hasn’t yet extended to license plates. Until that changes, here’s the only way:
Pro tip: If you name the image file with a descriptive name (e.g., “florida_flag.png”), it will appear as a label in the selection menu.
Once applied, your custom plate appears on:
This makes it easy to spot your car in the app and adds a personal touch to your digital twin.
While the 2025 Holiday Update brought the feature to all models, Tesla has not yet enabled wireless upload for plate backgrounds. However, the company has been actively adding phone-based customization for other paint shop features, such as custom wraps (uploadable via the Tesla app). It’s highly likely that a future software update will allow you to upload license plate images directly from your phone, eliminating the need for a USB drive. Keep an eye on firmware release notes for “License Plate Upload via App” or similar wording.
Another notable change: The 2025 update also improved the default holiday backgrounds, adding more regional flags and seasonal designs. Tesla’s official release notes confirmed that the license plate background library now includes 15 new templates, up from the original 5.
Customizing your Tesla’s license plate visualization is a simple, low-effort way to stand out. Whether you want to match your real-world plate or just have fun with a creative background, the process takes only a few minutes. The current limitation of USB-only upload is a minor inconvenience, but given Tesla’s trajectory, we expect wireless support to arrive soon. For now, grab a USB drive, design your perfect plate, and give your digital Tesla a personality that’s all your own.
