Clayton County officer dragging

Clayton County police on Wednesday identified Christopher Harold Lovett, 59, as the man accused of dragging an officer with his car during a traffic stop.

The incident happened around 2:15 p.m. near Garden Walk Boulevard and Medical Center Drive. The encounter began as a traffic stop, though authorities have not disclosed what prompted the stop or how it escalated into the alleged dragging.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been discharged. The full extent of the injuries remains unknown.

Under Georgia law, aggravated assault on a peace officer is a felony, and using a vehicle as a weapon can lead to enhanced penalties. Police have not said whether Lovett has been arrested or formally charged.

Investigators also have not said whether the stop was captured on dashboard or body-worn cameras. Such footage, if it exists, would likely be central to the case.

The case underscores how quickly a routine traffic stop can turn dangerous, a concern police agencies across the Atlanta metro area have increasingly emphasized in officer-safety training.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Clayton County Police Department.
