As of April 23, 2025, a viral video showing a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado owner being told he must replace the entire door panel—not just a broken handle clip—has sparked fresh outrage over how modern cars are designed to be nearly impossible to repair affordably.

The $525 Clip That Became a Door Panel

Thomas, a content creator who goes by @carsrme2 on TikTok, posted a video that racked up over 128,000 views. He explained that while installing a camera system, he accidentally locked himself out of his Silverado. When he yanked the door handle to get back in, a small plastic clip inside the handle snapped. “No biggie,” he thought—just order a replacement part.

But when he searched online, he couldn’t find the clip. The dealer told him they don’t sell the handle separately; the entire door panel must be ordered, and it comes pre-assembled with a new window switch. The price: $525. Thomas took the broken handle apart to confirm, and sure enough, the clip was molded into the plastic in a way that made it impossible to remove without destroying the whole assembly.
