March 27, 2025 – Chery has officially confirmed that its all-new Stockman ute will arrive before the end of the year, initially as a fully-loaded dual-cab model. But the Chinese automaker isn’t stopping there: it has revealed plans for a more work-oriented variant designed specifically for contractors and tradespeople.

Chery Australia Chief Operating Officer Lucas Harris laid out the strategy in a recent interview, stating that the launch model will come with all the “bells and whistles.” He ruled out a single-cab version for the foreseeable future, signaling that the company will focus on dual-cab configurations for now.

“The launch model will be fully decked out,” Harris said. “Then we’ll follow up with a variant that strips back some of the luxury features to target the tradie audience.”

The Stockman is a critical addition to Chery’s lineup, marking its entry into the highly competitive ute segment in Australia – a market dominated by Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger. By offering a work-grade version after the initial launch, Chery aims to capture price-sensitive buyers who need a rugged, affordable tool for the job site.

What the Work Variant Might Offer

While Harris didn’t disclose specific details, industry insiders expect the work-focused Stockman to feature a steel tray instead of a tub, lower trim levels, and fewer electronic gadgets. The powertrain is likely to carry over from the top-spec model, likely a turbocharged petrol or diesel engine paired with an automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive will probably be standard to maintain off-road capability.

Chery’s approach mirrors what other automakers have done with trucks like the Ford F-150 XL or the Ram 1500 Tradesman – offering a no-frills base model that still delivers the core utility. The Stockman work variant could also come with a lower starting price, potentially undercutting rivals and attracting fleet buyers.

Why a Dual-Cab Only Strategy?

Dual-cab utes are the dominant body style in Australia, accounting for over 80% of new ute sales. Harris’ decision to skip a single-cab version makes sense from a volume perspective. Single-cab models are often used for commercial fleets but have lower margins and slower turnover. By focusing on dual-cab, Chery can appeal to both families and tradespeople who need passenger space.

However, the lack of a single-cab option might disappoint some traditionalists who prefer a dedicated work truck with a longer tray. Chery seems willing to bet that the work-grade dual-cab will fill that niche.

Could the Stockman Come to the US?

Although the Stockman is initially destined for Australia, the move raises questions about Chery’s ambitions in North America. The automaker has been exploring entry into the US market for several years, and a compact pickup like the Stockman would directly compete with the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz – both of which have seen strong demand.

If Chery decides to bring the Stockman stateside, the work variant could be marketed as a budget-friendly alternative for contractors and small business owners. The US market for compact trucks is growing, and a well-priced, functional model could carve out a niche.

Of course, any US launch would require significant modifications to meet safety and emissions standards, plus the establishment of a dealer network. Chery has not announced any formal plans, but the vehicle’s architecture is designed to be adaptable for global markets.

Competitive Landscape

In Australia, the Stockman will face stiff competition from the Toyota HiLux Workmate, Ford Ranger XL, and Isuzu D-Max SX. These models have long been favorites among tradies for their reliability and resale value. Chery will need to win over buyers with a compelling warranty, competitive pricing, and strong after-sales support.

The work variant could be a differentiator if Chery manages to undercut the HiLux by several thousand dollars while offering similar payload and towing capacity. Early reports suggest the Stockman will have a payload of around 1,000 kg and a towing capacity of 3,500 kg – figures that match the segment leaders.

Timing and Next Steps

The fully-loaded Stockman dual-cab is expected to hit Australian showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2025. The work variant would follow in early 2026, pending production capacity and supply chain constraints. Chery is also expected to release detailed specifications, including engine options and fuel economy, closer to launch.

For now, Chery’s strategy is clear: grab attention with a feature-packed launch model, then expand the lineup with a practical, no-nonsense variant that meets the needs of the working class. If executed well, the Stockman could become a serious contender in the global ute market.
