Cardano Founder Hits Back: 'What the Hell Else Can I Do?'

Oct. 5, 2026 — Charles Hoskinson didn't mince words this past weekend. After critics accused Cardano of delivering years of development without enough liquidity or on-chain usage, the Cardano founder fired back with a list of projects and a blunt question: "What the hell else can I do?" The exchange took place on X between Oct. 3 and Oct. 4, and it captures the tension surrounding ADA as the network moves deeper into a "build first, measure later" phase.

How the fight started

The first complaint came from a Cardano community member who said Hoskinson had hurt ADA holders by launching Midnight as a separate network. Hoskinson rejected that logic immediately. He reminded critics that NIGHT was issued on Cardano as a native asset, asked which Cardano Native Asset was the first to be listed on Binance, and pointed out that the wallets used to manage NIGHT are Cardano wallets. If that is the problem, he argued, then Cardano is punishing the wrong people. "The stupidity is strong here," he wrote. "Apparently, launching a project on Cardano is bad for Cardano."

A second critic pushed harder, describing Hoskinson as a "used car salesman" and claiming Cardano has low liquidity, no stablecoins, and no DEX volume. That post went further and said Hoskinson always blames ADA holders instead of developers when the ecosystem underperforms. "Most people just want their money back," the critic wrote.

Hoskinson didn't address the tone. He answered with a checklist of active projects.

The checklist

He started with RealFi, which is now live on Cardano mainnet after months of testing. RealFi is aimed at bringing real-world finance use cases to the chain, and Hoskinson has previously linked the project to a longer-term goal of pushing Cardano's DeFi TVL toward $1 billion. That sounds ambitious, but it's now testable.

Midnight, the privacy-focused network, launched its mainnet in March. Its NIGHT token has been around since December 2025 as a Cardano Native Asset, and Midnight.city, an AI-focused application attached to the Midnight ecosystem, is in open beta.

Hoskinson also mentioned Pogun, a Bitcoin-focused DeFi project that wants to offer credit, yield, and bridging. Its September attempt to secure a 12.29 million ADA treasury allocation fell short of enough support, but Hoskinson says the project is still on the way.

Then there is the infrastructure side. The Pentad partnership bundle has already delivered Pyth and USDCx to Cardano. LayerZero is being deployed in phases, and Fireblocks says it will add full support for Cardano Native Tokens. Hoskinson mentioned Draper and Alphagrowth too, two ecosystem programs he believes will keep pushing the network forward.

Are the critics wrong?

Not entirely, and the data proves that.

Cardano currently has about $68.3 million in DeFi TVL and $67.2 million in stablecoins. DEX volume is around $4.05 million over 24 hours and $41 million over seven days, with weekly volume up 133%. The chain logged roughly 18,964 active addresses and 34,905 transactions over a 24-hour period.

Those numbers mean the "no stablecoins" and "no DEX volume" claims are overstated. But the same numbers also show why critics are frustrated. For a network that has been live for years and can process thousands of transactions per second, $68 million in TVL is small compared with newer ecosystems that have grown faster.

Hoskinson's defense is not that Cardano has already won. His defense is that Cardano has spent that time building infrastructure designed to produce usage later. The problem is that "later" has now arrived.

What to watch next

These are the signals that will prove or disprove Hoskinson's argument over the next month:

  • RealFi's first real usage: The protocol is on mainnet. Next step is deposits flowing into RealFi markets. If TVL doesn't move, the $1 billion thesis will look much weaker.
  • NIGHT liquidity on Cardano DEXs: Binance gives NIGHT global distribution, but that doesn't automatically create on-chain Cardano activity. Watch for NIGHT trading pairs on Cardano-native DEXs.
  • Fireblocks support going live: An official announcement is not the same as a live product. If Fireblocks starts offering Cardano Native Token custody to institutions, that would be a major validation of Cardano as a tokenization platform.
  • Pogun after the treasury vote: Community support wasn't there in September. If Pogun launches anyway, it will test whether Cardano's governance is a real gating factor or just a suggestion.

The bottom line

Charles Hoskinson can point to RealFi, Midnight, Midnight.city, Pogun, and Pentad all in one message. That is not nothing. But the debate has moved from "can Cardano ship code?" to "can Cardano generate economic activity?" RealFi's mainnet launch on Oct. 1 is the first clear measuring point. The next 30 days will be far more meaningful than the next announcement.
