Car crashes into Burger Box Indio, longtime restaurant damaged

Indio, CA – April 10, 2025 – A vehicle plowed into the front of Burger Box, a beloved Indio institution that has served burgers and shakes for over 40 years, early Wednesday morning. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the car, was not injured in the crash, but the restaurant sustained heavy structural damage, forcing its closure indefinitely.

Incident details

The crash occurred around 5:30 a.m. at the restaurant’s location on Highway 111 near Monroe Street, according to the Indio Police Department. Officers responded to reports of a single-vehicle accident involving a building. Preliminary investigation suggests the driver lost control while entering the parking lot, possibly due to a medical episode, though authorities have not confirmed that theory.

“The vehicle went through the front wall and came to rest inside the dining area,” said Indio Police Sergeant Lisa Tran. “The driver was alert and cooperative. We are still looking into the cause.”

Firefighters assessed the building for structural stability and deemed it unsafe for occupancy. The restaurant’s front entrance, a section of the wall, and several tables were destroyed. No employees or customers were inside at the time of the crash, as the restaurant does not open until 7 a.m.

Owner: ‘We’ll rebuild’

Burger Box owner Maria Hernandez, whose family has run the restaurant since 1982, told Indio Today that she received a phone call from police minutes after the crash.

“I was in shock. I’ve never seen anything like this,” Hernandez said, standing outside the boarded-up building. “We’ve been through a lot over the years, but this is a first. The important thing is no one was hurt. We’ll clean up, fix the wall, and reopen as soon as we can.”

She estimated repairs could take at least two to three weeks, depending on insurance and contractor availability. The restaurant has a loyal customer base, and many regulars have already expressed support on social media.

Community reaction

Longtime customer David Chen, who has been eating at Burger Box since he was a child, called the crash “heartbreaking.”

“This place is a cornerstone of Indio. It’s where families come after Little League games, where high school kids have their first dates,” Chen said. “I hope they get back on their feet quickly.”

The restaurant has been a fixture in the Indio community for decades, known for its classic American fare, vintage decor, and friendly service. It has survived economic downturns, competition from chain fast-food outlets, and even the COVID-19 pandemic, but this is the first time a vehicle has crashed into the building.

Exclusive: Insurance expert weighs in

We spoke with John Martinez, a licensed insurance adjuster with 20 years of experience in the Coachella Valley. He said commercial property claims for vehicle collisions are typically covered under standard business insurance policies, but business interruption coverage may vary.

“If the restaurant has lost business income coverage, they can file a claim for revenue lost during the repair period,” Martinez explained. “But the driver’s auto insurance may also be liable for damage to the building. It’s a complex situation that often requires coordination between two insurers.”

Martinez noted that such crashes are not uncommon in the region, especially near busy highways. He advised other restaurant owners to review their policies and consider adding barriers or bollards to protect entrances.

What’s next

The Indio Police Department is continuing its investigation. The driver’s name has not been released pending an interview with detectives. The restaurant’s parking lot and frontage remain cordoned off with yellow tape.

Burger Box has posted a sign on the door: “Closed until further notice due to accident. We will be back! Thank you for your support.”

Hernandez said she plans to hold a community reopening event once repairs are complete. “We’ve been here for 40 years, and we’ll be here for 40 more,” she said.
