UPDATE: March 25, 2025 — 2:30 PM CT
A vehicle plowed into two homes in Calumet on Tuesday afternoon, leaving a trail of debris and structural damage. Police and fire crews responded to the intersection of Maple Street and 4th Avenue after reports of a single-vehicle crash that ended in a residential yard.
As of the latest update, authorities have not confirmed any injuries. The driver, whose identity has not been released, was reportedly alert and speaking with first responders at the scene. No occupants of the homes were believed to be inside at the time of the crash, but officials are still verifying.
Scene and Response
Witnesses described hearing a loud screech followed by a heavy impact. "It sounded like an explosion. I ran outside and saw the car wedged between the two houses," said neighbor Maria Lopez, who lives three doors down.
Emergency personnel cordoned off the area, and structural engineers were called to assess the stability of the affected homes. Large cracks were visible in the exterior walls of both houses, and the vehicle's front end was crumpled against a porch support column.
Calumet Police Chief David Torres stated that the cause remains under investigation. "We are looking into all possibilities, including speed, mechanical failure, and driver impairment. It's too early to draw conclusions," he said.
Traffic and Safety Impact
The crash has closed Maple Street between 3rd and 5th Avenues. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes. Local traffic is being rerouted, and delays are expected through the evening commute.
This incident adds to a growing list of vehicle-into-building crashes in Calumet. According to city records, there have been at least five similar collisions in the past two years, often occurring at uncontrolled intersections or near crosswalks.
Official Statements
Calumet Fire Department spokesperson Elena Rodriguez said crews worked quickly to stabilize the scene. "Our primary concern is ensuring there are no gas leaks or electrical hazards. The homes have been evacuated as a precaution."
The Calumet Building Department will conduct a full inspection before residents can return. The owners of the two houses have been contacted and are being provided with temporary housing assistance by the Red Cross, which is standing by.
Community Reaction
Local residents expressed concern about traffic safety in the area. "This street is a cut-through for people speeding to the highway. We've been asking for speed bumps for years," said James Harding, a community board member.
The Calumet City Council is expected to discuss traffic calming measures during its next meeting on Thursday.
Next Steps
Police have impounded the vehicle for forensic examination. Toxicology results for the driver are pending. Anyone with dashcam footage or information is asked to contact Calumet Police Department at (555) 123-4567.
