April 3, 2025 – Cache Advisors LLC, a registered investment advisor based in New York, has purchased a significant stake in Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA), according to a recent 13F filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The disclosure, made public on Tuesday, shows the firm acquired approximately 275,000 shares of the electric vehicle giant during the first quarter of 2025, valued at roughly $95 million based on average prices.
The move comes at a time when Tesla stock has been under pressure due to mixed delivery numbers, ongoing price cuts, and heightened competition from Chinese EV makers like BYD. However, Cache Advisors’ bet suggests that at least one institutional player sees long-term value in the company’s dominant position in the EV market, its expanding energy storage business, and its potential in autonomous driving and robotics.
Cache Advisors is not a household name like Vanguard or BlackRock, but its portfolio moves are closely watched by smaller investors who follow institutional filings. The firm’s decision to initiate a new position in Tesla stands out because it comes after several quarters of institutional selling. According to data from WhaleWisdom, Tesla’s institutional ownership dropped by 2.3% in Q4 2024, with many funds trimming positions amid uncertainty over Elon Musk’s leadership and the company’s growth trajectory.
“This purchase is a contrarian signal,” said Mark Roberts, an analyst at Fidelity’s investment research division. “Cache Advisors is known for value-oriented plays, and they’re buying Tesla at a time when the stock is roughly 30% off its 52-week high. It indicates they believe the sell-off is overdone.”
Tesla’s stock has been a rollercoaster. After a strong 2023, shares fell sharply in early 2024 as demand concerns mounted. The company reported a 4% decline in global deliveries in Q1 2025 compared to the same period last year, missing analyst expectations. Yet, there are bright spots:
Cache Advisors may also be betting on a catalyst: the upcoming Robotaxi unveiling scheduled for August 2025. If Tesla can demonstrate a viable autonomous ride-hailing service, the stock could see a significant rerating.
The news of Cache Advisors’ purchase was first reported by SEC filing trackers on Wednesday morning. Tesla shares rose 1.8% in pre-market trading following the announcement, though the broader market was flat. By the close, TSLA ended the day up 0.9%, outperforming the S&P 500’s 0.3% decline.
Not all analysts are convinced. “One institutional buy doesn’t change the underlying challenges,” warned Sarah Chen, an automotive analyst at Morgan Stanley. “Tesla faces headwinds from softening EV demand, especially in Europe where subsidies are being cut. The stock could remain range-bound until we see a clear path to volume growth.”
However, the Cache Advisors filing adds to a growing list of value-oriented funds that have recently taken positions in Tesla. Earlier this week, GQG Partners increased its stake by 12%, and Greenlight Capital revealed a new call option position.
For retail investors following the “smart money,” Cache Advisors’ move is a data point worth considering. The firm’s track record includes successful bets on Meta during its 2022 slump and on energy stocks during the 2020 recovery. But copying institutional trades blindly is risky – filings are lagging (they reflect positions as of the end of the quarter) and the firm may have already adjusted its holdings.
Still, the purchase signals that Tesla is not being written off by all professional investors. The EV maker’s market cap remains above $500 billion, and its brand recognition and technological lead are formidable. As Cache Advisors likely expects, the next few quarters could bring a turnaround if Tesla delivers on its robotaxi promise and stabilizes its automotive margins.
Cache Advisors LLC’s acquisition of Tesla shares is a notable vote of confidence from a disciplined institutional investor. While the stock faces near-term headwinds, the purchase suggests that some money managers see the current price as an attractive entry point. Whether Tesla can regain its growth momentum remains to be seen, but the filing adds a bullish footnote to an otherwise cautious narrative.
