A two-car crash on Route 5 in Berlin, Conn., late Tuesday night sent one person to the hospital and forced a temporary shutdown of the southbound roadway after one vehicle caught fire, fire officials said.
Crews from the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched at about 8:40 p.m. to the southbound side of Route 5 after receiving reports of a collision involving two cars. When firefighters arrived, they found one vehicle on fire and an injured person in the roadway, according to the department’s official update.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the car blaze, and emergency medical personnel evaluated the injured individual on-site. The patient was then transported to a local hospital, where authorities described the injuries as non-life-threatening.
The collision left debris and leaking car oil spread across the highway. On-scene officials closed the southbound portion of Route 5 while tow trucks removed both vehicles and cleanup crews cleared the pavement. Traffic was allowed to resume after all wreckage and fluid were gone.
Investigators have not yet released details about what caused the two vehicles to crash. Department officials also did not say whether the injured person was a driver, passenger, or pedestrian. The lack of immediate answers leaves the incident under continued review.
Emergency responders reminded motorists to slow down or move over whenever they approach active accident sites. Secondary crashes are a frequent danger around fire and rescue scenes, and closing a highway during cleanup reduces the risk of more injuries. The incident underscores why drivers should avoid distractions and keep a safe distance from emergency equipment.
