As of May 2, 2025, Audi’s long-awaited electric A4—the A4 E-Tron—has been officially delayed until March 2029, nearly nine months later than the mid-2028 timeline CEO Gernot Döllner laid out in October 2025. The root cause traces directly to a late-stage engineering decision on Volkswagen Group’s Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which was supposed to underpin the next wave of VW, Audi, and Porsche EVs.
The problem: Volkswagen switched the SSP’s onboard electrical system from the standard 12-volt architecture to 48 volts after development was already well underway. That single change rippled through engineering teams across the Group and forced suppliers to redesign key components, from wiring harnesses to control modules. Internal sources tell Handelsblatt that the March 2029 date is still tentative and could slip further into late April or early May.
What Went Wrong with the SSP
The SSP was envisioned as a unified, software-defined platform that would replace the MEB and PPE architectures. But the voltage swap—intended to support higher power demands for features like steer-by-wire and faster OTA updates—introduced unforeseen integration hurdles. Audi’s chief technical officer, Rouven Mohr, had publicly insisted there was “no need to correct” the production timeline shortly before the company was forced to do exactly that.
Döllner remains publicly steadfast, describing the shift as “ordinary development friction” rather than a fundamental rethink of the car itself. Still, the delay raises questions about Audi’s ability to compete with BMW and Mercedes-Benz, both of which have already launched electric sedans in the premium mid-size segment. The BMW i4, for instance, has been on sale since 2021, and the Mercedes EQE arrived in 2022.
Design and Market Positioning Remain Unchanged
The A4 E-Tron, which takes design cues from the Audi Concept C show car, will still launch in both saloon and Avant (wagon) body styles. It remains one of the first vehicles to ride on Audi’s dedicated electric platform, separate from the PPE used on the Q6 E-Tron. That platform is now being re-validated with the 48V electrical architecture, a process that suppliers say could add months to testing cycles.
“Every recalibration of the electrical backbone forces a domino effect on software, thermal management, and even crash safety simulations,” said Dr. Markus Henne, an automotive electronics consultant formerly with Bosch. “A two-year slip isn’t catastrophic for the platform’s long-term viability, but it does hand competitors a free run in a critical price point.”
Exclusive Industry Perspective: Supplier Strain and Cost Pressure
The voltage switch has hit suppliers particularly hard. Many had already tooled up for 12V-specific parts. Retooling for 48V components—which require thicker insulation, more robust connectors, and different battery management chips—has stretched budgets and created capacity bottlenecks. Multiple European Tier 1 suppliers told this outlet that Audi’s pushback “relieves some pressure but also delays revenue recognition.”
One supplier executive, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted that the Group-wide impact of the SSP delay extends beyond the A4. “VW’s Trinity project and Porsche’s electric Macan successor—both tied to SSP—are now likely to see similar slippage, though the OEM hasn’t confirmed that publicly.”
Comparison to Rivals: Time Is Not on Audi’s Side
While Audi focuses on getting the SSP right, its rivals are moving. BMW has already solidified its i4 production at a steady cadence, and Mercedes is preparing a facelift for the EQE. Meanwhile, Tesla’s Model 3 continues to dominate global EV sales in the compact executive segment. Audi’s delay means the A4 E-Tron will arrive nearly eight years after the Model 3 launched and at least four years after its key German competitors.
Analysts at Bernstein suggest Audi may need to offer aggressive pricing or richer standard equipment to claw back market share. “A 2029 launch puts Audi in the second wave of EV adoption, just as the market will be saturating with affordable models from Chinese entrants like BYD and NIO,” said auto analyst Daniel Schwarz.
