Police in Portland, Oregon have arrested three teenagers in connection with an alleged attempted aggravated carjacking that unfolded in broad daylight Saturday morning. The incident, which drew immediate attention from local authorities, highlights ongoing concerns about youth crime in the area.

Detectives from the Portland Police Bureau’s Criminal Investigation Unit confirmed that the three suspects—a 19-year-old male, a 14-year-old female, and a third individual taken into custody later—are facing charges related to the attempted carjacking. The arrest came after a series of coordinated efforts by officers over the weekend.

According to Portland Police, the incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. on August 10, 2025, in a parking lot on Southwest Mair Street, near the city’s commercial district. The victim, a 34-year-old man, was sitting in his vehicle when three teenagers approached. One of them allegedly brandished a knife and attempted to open the driver’s side door.

“The victim acted quickly. He locked all doors, and the suspect was unable to gain entry,” said Sergeant Laura Chen, a spokesperson for the Portland Police Bureau. “The suspects then fled on foot, leaving the knife under the front tire.”

The victim, who was not injured, immediately called 911. Officers arrived within minutes but were unable to locate the suspects. However, surveillance footage from nearby businesses helped investigators identify the trio.

The 19-year-old male and the 14-year-old female, both residents of Portland, were arrested on Saturday, August 10, at separate locations. The third suspect, a 17-year-old male, was taken into custody on Monday, August 12, at a residence in the Winter Valley neighborhood. Police said he attempted to flee from officers during the arrest.

“This was a coordinated effort by our detectives and patrol units,” Sergeant Chen added. “We are committed to holding these individuals accountable.”

The suspects are currently being held at the Multnomah County Detention Center. Charges include attempted aggravated carjacking, possession of a weapon, and, in the case of the third suspect, resisting arrest. The 14-year-old female is being processed through the juvenile justice system.

This incident has sparked discussions among local residents about safety in public parking areas. “It’s scary that this happened in the morning, in a busy lot,” said Maria Torres, a nearby business owner. “I’m glad the victim was alert, but we need more patrols.”

Portland has seen a fluctuating trend in carjacking attempts over the past year. According to data from the Portland Police Bureau, reported carjackings increased by 12% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year. The majority of cases have involved suspects under the age of 20.

“While this one was prevented, it’s a reminder that carjackings are often crimes of opportunity,” said Dr. James Carter, a criminologist at Portland State University. “Target hardening—like locking doors immediately—is a crucial defense. But law enforcement must also focus on prevention and intervention for at-risk youth.”

The police have encouraged anyone with information about this incident or similar crimes to contact the Portland Police Bureau’s tip line. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers of Oregon.

“We are reviewing the case and will coordinate with the district attorney’s office to ensure appropriate charges are filed,” Sergeant Chen said. “The safety of our community remains our top priority.”

In the wake of the arrest, the affected parking lot has seen increased police presence. Signs have been posted reminding drivers to lock their doors and remain vigilant. Local community groups are also planning a safety workshop later this month to discuss situational awareness.

The investigation is ongoing, and police have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges or arrests. The three suspects are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, August 14, for a preliminary hearing.

This case serves as a cautionary tale for drivers everywhere. Even in a busy city lot, a moment of distraction can invite danger. The victim’s quick actions may have prevented a serious injury or worse, and law enforcement is urging everyone to adopt similar vigilance.

“We cannot stress enough the importance of being aware of your surroundings,” Sergeant Chen said. “If you see something suspicious, don’t wait—call 911. Your call could save a life.”
