October 27, 2026 – Google is quietly experimenting with a new color palette for Google Maps inside Android Auto, aiming to make navigation less visually fatiguing on large screens. An APK teardown of the latest Android Auto beta (v17.6.663424) reveals that the company is testing a darker map surface and a revised turn indicator color – moving away from the current teal to a dark gray even in dark mode.

The current design uses a light map background and a teal-colored direction indicator in the top-right corner. While functional, many drivers find the bright contrast distracting, especially on high-resolution infotainment displays. The tweaks appear to address this by applying a darker, more muted backdrop to the map area, and swapping the teal turn indicator for a dark gray shade that blends better with the overall interface.

In dark mode, the changes are even more noticeable. Today, the turn indicator remains teal, which can look out of place against a dark UI. The new beta code suggests that Google is testing a much darker map surface and a fully dark gray turn indicator, improving visual consistency and reducing glare during nighttime driving.

Notably, these color changes seem to be confined to the Android Auto environment itself, rather than being rendered by the Google Maps app on the connected phone. This suggests Google is treating the map rendering as a separate layer within Android Auto, enabling more targeted UI experimentation. It remains unclear whether this is an intentional feature or a bug introduced in the latest beta.

The update was discovered through a standard APK teardown process, which involves analyzing incomplete code to predict future features. As always, there is no guarantee that the darker color scheme will reach a public release. However, given the growing size and brightness of car infotainment screens, a more driver-friendly palette would be a welcome improvement.

In addition to the map colors, the beta also includes new weather animations and Quick Settings tile support, signaling that Google is actively refining the Android Auto experience ahead of the larger redesign teased at I/O 2026. For now, users will have to wait and see whether the darker Google Maps UI becomes a permanent addition.

Expert perspective: “Reducing glare and visual noise is crucial for driver safety,” says Dr. Elena Marquez, a human-computer interaction researcher at Stanford. “A darker map background with lower contrast turn indicators can help drivers maintain focus on the road, especially in varying light conditions.”

Google has not commented on the beta changes. Android Authority will continue to monitor future updates for any signs of the new color scheme being rolled out to a wider audience.
