If fuel efficiency is your top priority in a three-row SUV, the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid is the clear winner, achieving a remarkable 35.1 mpg in our real-world testing—over 10 mpg better than its closest competitors. Our comprehensive 250-mile fuel economy challenge, designed to simulate a realistic road trip, revealed a surprisingly tight race for second place among six other popular models, proving that for most buyers, the choice may come down to factors other than gas mileage.
To provide accurate fuel economy numbers that reflect actual driving conditions, we devised a rigorous test protocol. Our route through Southern California included a full gamut of terrains: sustained elevation climbs, mountain passes, downhill coasts, agricultural flatlands, and both open and traffic-clogged highways. This variety ensures the results are more representative of everyday use than a standardized EPA test cycle.
To minimize the impact of individual driving styles, we cycled seven different drivers through each SUV at set intervals. We maintained consistent conditions with the air conditioning on Auto, drive modes set to Normal, windows up, and cruise control disengaged. Each vehicle was filled with the same 91-octane fuel from the same pump before and after the test. The final fuel-economy number for each SUV was calculated by averaging the trip-computer's indicated mpg with the pump-calculated average (miles traveled divided by gallons burned).
The results highlight a significant advantage for hybrid technology, followed by a remarkably close cluster of traditional gasoline-powered SUVs. The table below summarizes our findings.
| SUV Model & Trim | Engine Type | Real-World MPG (Averaged) |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid Limited | Hybrid | 35.1 mpg |
| 2024 Honda Pilot Elite | V-6 | 24.8 mpg |
| 2024 Volkswagen Atlas SEL Premium R-Line | Turbocharged 4-Cylinder | 24.8 mpg |
| 2024 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy Night Edition | V-6 | 23.9 mpg |
| 2024 Kia Telluride SX-Prestige X-Line | V-6 | 23.8 mpg |
| 2024 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum | V-6 | 23.8 mpg |
| 2024 Subaru Ascent Touring | Turbocharged 4-Cylinder | 22.9 mpg |
The Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid’s commanding lead was expected, but the narrow spread from second to seventh place—just 1.9 mpg—was a key finding. This suggests that for shoppers comparing non-hybrid three-row SUVs, fuel economy may not be the primary differentiator. Interestingly, the turbocharged four-cylinder engines showed varied performance; the Volkswagen Atlas was among the most efficient, while the Subaru Ascent landed in seventh place.
Based on our assessment experience, your choice should be guided by how much you prioritize fuel savings against other factors like interior space, driving dynamics, and technology.
Ultimately, the 2024 three-row SUV market offers clear options: the hyper-efficient Grand Highlander Hybrid for fuel-conscious buyers, and a group of closely-matched gasoline alternatives where your personal preference for features, style, and comfort can take precedence.
