A unit coordinator or charge nurse is responsible for making real-time staffing assignments throughout the day to ensure safe patient coverage. Unlike many other hospital units, NICU nurses typically care for a very small number of patients to allow for intensive monitoring. Most NICUs mandate a maximum ratio of one nurse to two or three babies. For infants requiring the most critical care, such as those on ventilators, a dedicated one-to-one nurse-to-patient ratio is standard. This setup allows the nurse to remain at the bedside continuously. For other infants, care is a delicate balance of providing necessary interventions while minimizing stress, essentially creating a nurturing environment for them to "sleep and grow."
