Based on our assessment experience, it delivers a compelling blend of spaciousness, robust powertrains, and decent driving range, though it prioritizes comfort over sporty handling.
The R1S's appeal lies in its powerful and quiet acceleration, usable third-row seating, and competitive electric range. However, potential drawbacks include a driving experience tuned more for comfort than sportiness, some interior build quality inconsistencies typical of a startup automaker, and a reliance on touchscreen controls for most functions.
Identical to the R1T pickup from the front seats forward, the R1S SUV is built on a shorter wheelbase and is about 16 inches shorter in overall length. This makes it significantly easier to maneuver in urban environments and tight parking spaces. The major addition is a standard third row of seats and extra enclosed cargo space behind it, making it the more family-oriented vehicle of the two.
All R1S models come with standard all-wheel drive (AWD), but power levels vary by configuration. While the system is well-organized, the lack of physical knobs can be a distraction. Additionally, Rivian's infotainment system does not currently support Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
