A storm door closer is a pneumatic, tube-shaped mechanism that allows a door to close gradually on its own, preventing it from slamming shut. Depending on the size and weight of the storm door, one or two of these devices may be installed. The mechanism is pneumatic, meaning it uses pressurized air to control the closing speed, and it contains no motorized parts, which contributes to its longevity. Over time, however, these closers can lose resistance, or their mounting brackets may bend, necessitating replacement.

You will need a drill with assorted bits and a driver attachment, a measuring tape, an awl or a permanent marker, a torpedo level, and a new storm door closer kit. The first step is to remove the old unit. The closer is secured with screws on one end to the door itself. The other end, the side with the pneumatic arm, is connected to a bracket on the door jamb with a pin.
Before installing the new closer, swing the door open and shut to confirm it moves cleanly without obstructions. If the door binds or sticks, the new closer will not function correctly and could be damaged. Identifying and fixing any issues with the door's alignment or hinges at this stage is crucial for the long-term performance of the new mechanism.
Secure the new bracket to the door jamb using the provided screws. If this is a first-time installation, use the template included with the closer kit to mark the correct height and depth for the bracket.
Many models include a chain retainer to prevent the door from being blown open too far by wind, which could break the closer. Install this component according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The final step is testing and adjustment. Open the door and allow it to close on its own. If it closes too quickly or slowly, use a screwdriver to turn the adjustment screw on the end of the cylinder. Turn it incrementally until the door closes at a safe, controlled speed.
