Bucs Collapse Late as Falcons Steal 29–28 Win on Final Kick

The Buccaneers appeared in control with 13 minutes to play, leading 28–14 after a three-yard touchdown pass from Baker Mayfield to Chris Godwin Jr. capped a second-half surge. But the momentum shift came quickly when Atlanta cornerback Dee Alford intercepted Mayfield at the Falcons’ 33-yard line, setting up a Falcons touchdown drive that brought them within striking distance.

After failing to convert a two-point attempt that would have tied the game, the Falcons marched down the field in the closing seconds. A 45-yard Zane Gonzalez field goal as time expired completed the comeback and handed Tampa Bay the loss.

Mayfield Takes Responsibility — Defense and Execution Key Issues

Mayfield, who finished with 277 passing yards, two touchdowns and the costly interception, took responsibility for the pivotal plays that swung the game. “It falls on my shoulders,” he said, lamenting a missed connection that could’ve prevented Atlanta’s final possession.

Despite several opportunities late, Tampa Bay’s defense could not stop Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins, who completed 30 of 44 passes for 373 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Bijan Robinson finished with 175 yards from scrimmage and a score.

Head coach Todd Bowles was critical of his team’s execution down the stretch, calling parts of the performance “inexcusable,” particularly a key fourth-and-14 conversion that helped Atlanta reach field goal range.

The loss dropped the Buccaneers to 7–7, knocking them out of first place in the NFC South behind the Carolina Panthers. With just a few games left, Tampa Bay’s hopes for a fifth straight division title now hinge on late-season consistency and improved execution.
