If there are electronic cameras, illegal U-turns will be captured. According to the "Regulations for the Implementation of the Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China," violators will be penalized with a 3-point deduction and a fine of 200 yuan. The basis is Article 49, which states that motor vehicles are not allowed to make U-turns at locations with no-U-turn or no-left-turn signs or markings, as well as at railway crossings, pedestrian crossings, bridges, sharp curves, steep slopes, tunnels, or other dangerous sections of the road. Permissible U-turn situations: Intersections with U-turn signs: If there is a clear U-turn sign at an intersection, a U-turn can be made. If there is a U-turn signal light, the U-turn must be made according to the signal. If there is no signal light, the U-turn should be made without obstructing other vehicles or pedestrians. Intersections without explicit no-U-turn or no-left-turn signs: If there is no explicit prohibition of U-turns at a location, a U-turn can be made. Here, "no explicit prohibition" means that as long as there are no "no-U-turn signs," "no-left-turn signs," or solid center lines, a U-turn can be safely made. Yellow grid lines also allow U-turns: Yellow grid lines are no-parking zones marked at intersections prone to congestion due to temporary parking, important entrances and exits, and other necessary locations. Any vehicle stopping on these grid lines (including waiting for traffic lights) is considered a violation. Although parking is not allowed in yellow grid zones, U-turns are permitted as long as there are no central barriers. Intersections with U-turn signal lights: This is straightforward—if there is a U-turn signal light, follow it. Only proceed with a U-turn when the light is green. No-left-turn and U-turn-allowed signs appearing together: U-turns are allowed, but left turns are prohibited. However, "no U-turn" is not the same as "no left turn." Precautions when making U-turns at intersections: Observe road markings. If they are solid lines, U-turns are prohibited under any circumstances, and you should continue driving to find a suitable location. If there is a "no left turn" sign ahead, even if there is no mention of a U-turn prohibition, U-turns are not allowed at that intersection because U-turns and left turns are similar maneuvers—both require turning left first. U-turns must be made from the innermost left-turn lane. If you are in the second left-turn lane, a U-turn is not permitted at that intersection. Always yield to straight-moving vehicles before making a U-turn. If you interfere with their normal flow, you will bear full responsibility for any accidents. Near intersection stop lines, lanes often have guiding arrows for drivers to choose their direction. The leftmost lane is not always marked for left turns. If it has a straight arrow, U-turns are prohibited even if there are no explicit no-U-turn signs.
